a word

DSC00002

i got a new point & shoot camera very recently, above is the first picture i snapped right when i popped the battery in after it was charged for the first time. it came about because she pleaded with me very excitedly (and was hovering me very excitedly as i was getting the new camera set up) 'take my picture take my picture'. i'm not trying to show-off any skill or lack thereof, but, i just want to say this pic and everything about it what it stands for and how it came to be, just makes me extremely happy. i know i haven't had the best few months, as she can attest to, but maybe i have, maybe we have. maybe we've gained the strength to get through anything. and that she can be by my side, so excited and enthusiastic for an immediate or further future, still after everything we've been through, just puts me in so much awe, gazing at this picture i feel all that passing through me.

shot during the 2008 Olympics, the project consisted of digital photos of televised footage. as the images have been filtered so much by first a television camera, then a cathode ray tube, then another digital camera, the idea of technology plays an omnipresent role in the thematic content of the project. is it oppressive? is it freeing? the compositions, flickered and strained, themselves seem to float in a black haze of uncertainty.this is all juxtaposed and countered with something else that was distilled by all the technological filtering: a spirit of humanness. the sincerity of the athletes' exploits is also juxtaposed by the presence of pervasive advertisements and such.

i was reminded of this living legend and huge personal influence as he had a brief interview in the current issue of Oyster magazine. in it he shines light to the fact that digital photography is not like photography, but painting, because it is no longer a record of truth (thus he keeps it at arm's length, for now). i'd quote exactly if i had the magazine in front of me, but anyway, what inspires me about his work is how the world in his pragmatic eye is foiled by this unveiled sentimentality in evocative washes and washes of color.
